ADVANCING TRENCHLESS INFRASTRUCTURE

The Nose Creek Sanitary Sewer Trunk Project – Phase B, Contract 4 in Calgary, AB, Canada was developed to expand wastewater capacity and support future population growth in northern Calgary. The project involved twinning the existing sanitary sewer trunk with approximately 2.3 km of new pipeline, much of it installed using trenchless microtunnelling technology to minimize surface disruption. A major highlight of the work was a record-breaking 1.5 km continuous microtunnel drive, one of the longest completed in North America. The project demonstrated advanced engineering, precision construction, and strong collaboration between the City of Calgary, Jacobs, and Ward & Burke Microtunnelling Ltd., earning recognition as the 2025 No-Dig North Project of the Year for New Installation.

The Challenge

To safely launch and retrieve the Herrenknecht microtunnel boring machine (MTBM), Ward & Burke designed and constructed a 9.2-m ID concrete caisson launch shaft, along with 6-m and 5-m ID reception shafts. The launch shaft included heavily reinforced sections behind the jacking frame to withstand the forces generated during microtunnelling operations. All three shafts were installed in clay soil layers above claystone, requiring careful engineering and precise construction techniques.

Why Project Is Outstanding
The NCSST project is exceptional in the fact that it broke the record for the longest single microtunnel drive completed to date in North America. The single drive was 1.5km long. It featured four horizontal curves ranging from 700-m to 1,750-m radius.
